I recently purchased a Remington AR 15 with the 18 inch barrel in .223. 223 with correct bullets and shot placement, and the ability to pass up bad shots, is as deadly as any other round on deer, even big deer. I would not risk a wounded deer with a bullet not designed to be used on such.

the 63/ 64s are good bullets for deer. Many have blown primers using the .223 and 5.56 Superformance factory loads. It's a great deer bullet. After 4000+ rnds, traded it in for another one. I will try the 55 grain Nosler varminator first off and see how they go. I've switched to 77gr CCs (cheaper and more available, believe it or not) but I used to run 75gr HPBT in a 1:9 26" Savage bolt gun and got consistent sub-half MOA 5-shot groups with 24.0gr Varget out to 200yd. I killed the biggest deer of my life last year with a 75 gn Hornady bthp loaded with 24 gn of varget. This is across several AR barrels including Noveske, Wilson Combat, and Rainer Select. He says it has mushroomed picture perfect and the nose is about the size of a dime and had come about two thirds down on the bullet. Anybody got in experience with them on game! I have a 16" middy Voodoo barrel on my AR with a 1:7 twist. The Noslers, with all things the same, are rolling true, with maybe 2% showing a barely perceivable wobble. bit on the frangible side IMHO. It was a spine shot just behind the head and it just blew out the spine and part of the head and dropped him at 85 long paces. Heart/lung shots have never lost me a pound of meat. I'd rather use 75 amax on deer if I had the choice. I use the Hornady 75gr HPBT as my 'go to' load for two AR's, one an 18" Noveske 1:7 and a 16" WOA 1:7, both with similar results as Rob,Scudzuki and others above. your 12 twist should stabalize up to 63-64 grain bullets. I would use my old 30-30 before I'd use that caliber. Have had fairly good results from PMC Stuff over the years.
